5th Oregon Bioengineering Symposium slated for Nov. 3

Graphic that reads: Oregon Bioengineering Symposium 2023

The fifth annual Oregon Bioengineering Symposium is scheduled to take place on Friday, Nov. 3 at the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact. The symposium aims to bring together esteemed researchers, clinicians, and industry professionals from various bioengineering disciplines.

This year's conference theme, "Translating Ideas into Practice," emphasizes the importance of bridging the gap between theoretical concepts and practical applications within the field of bioengineering. Abstracts are under review for oral presentations and poster presentations that align with this theme and explore the latest advancements in bioengineering research.

For the first time, OBS will welcome an outside speaker for the featured keynote address. Dr. Jason Burdick, who is Bowman Endowed Professor of the BioFrontiers Institute and Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder, is the 2023 keynote speaker.

Registration for the symposium is now open. Early bird registration will be available until 5 pm (Pacific Time) on Sept. 15, 2023, offering participants the opportunity to secure their spots at a discounted rate. Regular registration will remain open until 5 pm (Pacific Time) on Oct.29, 2023. Late registrations will also be accepted at the door on Nov. 3, although they will not guarantee a printed nametag or boxed lunch.

In addition to the opportunity to present research findings, this year's symposium offers several awards to recognize excellence in the field. These include the "Excellence in Research" award, which acknowledges outstanding work by students and early career investigators. It highlights research ideas, approaches, or methodologies that push the boundaries of existing knowledge and provide unique perspectives. The winner will receive a prize of $200.

The symposium also features awards for the best oral presentations by postdoctoral researchers and students, with prizes of $150 and $100, respectively. Exceptional quality, originality, and contribution to the field will be the criteria for selection. Moreover, three awards of $50 each will be presented for the best poster presentations, evaluating clarity of content, organization, and visual design.

An exciting addition to this year's program is the opportunity to showcase creative talent through the "Best Oregon Bioengineering Symposium Logo" award. Participants are invited to submit their logo designs, and the winning submission will receive a $100 prize. Details about the logo award criteria are available on the OBS website.

Notifications for oral presentations will be sent out by Aug. 28, 2023, following a peer-review process conducted by the conference's scientific committee. The late-breaking abstract submission deadline is 5 pm (Pacific Time) on Sept. 15, 2023, for those who have significant and original findings to share.

The committee members are excited to receive abstract submissions and look forward to welcoming attendees to the fifth annual Oregon Bioengineering Symposium, which is co-sponsored by the University of Oregon, Oregon State University, and Oregon Health & Science University.
