The Skybridge

The Knight Campus skybridge connects to other UO science facilities physically and metaphorically while also creating an architectural landmark for the community and university. The tied-arch bridge — using uses two butterfly arches and suspension cables — is designed as a simple and pure expression of engineering to maximize the visual lightness of the structure.

Ecosystem and Ethos

Rooted in the University of Oregon’s 60-year history of interdisciplinary research, the best-in-class facility is specifically designed to encourage a team-based, interactive approach to research. From day one, students and faculty are immersed in the unique culture of the Knight Campus, one that emphasizes the rapid translation of new procedures, medical devices or treatments.

Cultivating Diverse Perspectives 

A new partnership with PeaceHealth, a joint center for translational biomedical research, is initially focused on facilitating clinical need-based research collaborations and supporting careers of underrepresented scientists and engineers.
This fall, 50 percent of students starting the nationally recognized Knight Campus Internship Program, which focuses on industry-relevant technical and professional skills, are women and/or members of underrepresented communities.

This world class facility was designed to support the impact cycle, a foundational idea of the Knight Campus best represented by the concepts of discovery, development, and deployment. The building will be the home of discovery at the lab bench, the development of biomedical devices and therapies, and the deployment of new technologies to the marketplace.

The Cascading Wall

The signature architectural element of the Knight Campus exterior is affectionately known as the Cascading Wall. Inspired by water cascading over rocks, the second skin of glass on the building’s southern, eastern and western facades reduces solar heat inside research environments and reduces glare, allowing those spaces access to abundant daylight and dynamic views of surrounding landscapes.

Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Whether it’s with 3D-printed patient-specific implants, implantable screws with built-in sensors to monitor healing, or a molecule to combat macular degeneration, the Knight Campus’ high-octane collaborative approach to innovation is already fueling success. Faculty recruited from around the world have launched three start-up companies, moving new technologies into the marketplace, where they can help make patients’ lives better.

What You Might Have Missed...

A monumental infographic runs the width of a basement commons glass wall. Abstracted from The Atlas of Oregon, the graphic represents Oregon's peaks on glazed partitions. 
The carpet in the center of the basement lobby is an exciting new product design that emerged from the work of one of UO’s own researchers, physicist Richard Taylor, a leading expert on fractals, together with 13&9 Design and Mohawk Group.
A ceramic frit — or dot — pattern on the exterior facades reduces solar heat gain, interior glare and discomfort while also reducing bird strikes. In one section, the custom patterning is based on the DNA sequence of a duck.
