Fei Mao received his doctorate in chemistry from the University of Oregon in 1990 and has since established a successful career as a researcher, inventor, and entrepreneur in the biotech industry. After receiving his doctorate, Mao first worked at Molecular Probes, Inc. (now part of Thermo Fisher, Co.), where he made a number of inventions in fluorescent dye technologies. Among the inventions is a series of AlexaFluor® dyes, which are now widely used in life science research and diagnostics. Later he worked at Therasense (another biotech company), where he developed the core technology (a novel biocompatible membrane and glucose-sensing chemistry) for an implantable real-time continuous blood glucose monitor, which is now being marketed under the brand name FreeStyle Libre® by Abbott Laboratories. Currently, Mao is the founder and president of Biotium—a biotech company, and a co-founder of Neurocentria—a clinical-stage pharmaceutical company. Biotium has become a leading supplier of innovative fluorescent molecular tools for life science research, medical diagnostics, and drug screening. Neurocentria is currently running phase two clinical trials for several neurological indications, and planning phase three clinical trials for early Alzheimer’s Disease, using its leading drug candidate, MMFS. Dr. Mao holds 132 granted US patents and 142 pending US patents.
